Opportunities and Challenges of New Technology Integration in the High School Curriculum in Gweru Urban, Zimbabwe
Abstract
The study assessed opportunities and challenges of new technology integration in high schools in Gweru urban in Midlands Province of Zimbabwe. This study took a quantitative approach particularly employing the descriptive survey. A sample of 114 teachers was selected through random sampling technique. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. Results of the study revealed that computers were the commonly used technology in many schools and teachers had a positive attitude towards the integration of new technology in the curriculum. The study further revealed that technology use improves students’ attention and cooperation in the classroom. However, the study also established the lack of resources to purchase hardware and software, lack of computer skills by teachers, a congested curriculum that demotivates teachers, poor infrastructure, non-availability of teaching space and abuse of the internet by students were identified as drawbacks in the integration of new technology in the curriculum. The researchers recommend that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education ought to put a clear training policy for teachers so as to equip them for the effective use of new technology in schools. More resources ought to be allocated towards the acquisition of computers and other technological accessories in schools.
