Abstract

Biology teaching for man Ano his environment? A critical view

A critical look is taken at the major shortcomings in the teaching of 'modern' Biology in most South African schools. The view is advanced that Biology should be one of the major vehicles for the objectives of Environmental Education. In the midst of environmental concerns of ever increasing proportions few changes have come about in the formal teaching of Biology. As the biggest examination subject it should benefit not only a chosen few who go into research, but make a major contribution towards the formation of those values and skills of the man in the street to enable him to be actively involved in decision-making processes where environmental quality is at stake. Some suggestions are made on how, within the present syllabuses, a new approach can lead to the preparation of more responsible citizens.
