Effect of Audio Visual Teaching Materials on the Spoken English of Junior Secondary Schools in Gombe, Gombe State
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of audio-visual materials on the instruction and acquisition of speaking skills among Junior Secondary School students in the Gombe local government area of Gombe state. The population of the study consisted of 1,500 students drawn from four junior secondary schools in the area. The population further covered both male and female students. From this population, 200 respondents were randomly sampled and divided into Control and Experimental groups. Three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance level of. Speaking Assessment Test (SAT) was developed by the researchers and used as instrument of data collection. The SAT was given to some experts in both Gombe State University (GSU) and the Federal University of Kashere to validate it. The responses received were incorporated into the draft which modified and improved its validity. The SAT was pilot tested by administering to some junior secondary school students that were part of the sample of the study using test retest method. The data generated in the pilot test was computed using Spearman Rank Order which yielded a coefficient of relationship of 0.67 and was considered good enough by the researchers. The treatment involved four lessons per week, with two periods each, utilizing Video Compact Disc and Chart for the experimental and control groups respectively. The collected data were subjected to t-test analysis to address the research questions and test the null hypotheses. The study found out among other things that using audio-visual materials in teaching and learning enhances the performance of junior secondary school students in speaking skills. It was equally found out that the utilization of audio-visual materials for teaching and learning speaking skills proves to be significantly more effective than the conventional method among junior secondary school students in English.
