Factors associated with use of yam mini sett technology in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study assessed yam mini–sett technology adoption performance and determinants among yam farmers in Egbeda LGA of Oyo state, Nigeria. Data were collected from 136 yam producers and analysed using descriptive and logistic regression statistics. Results show that all respondents were aware of the yam mini–sett technique but only 43.4 % have adopted the practice. About 36% have discontinued the use of the technique while 20.6% have never tried it before. The poor adoption frequency was due to non–availability of farm chemicals (mean = 2.86), long duration required to produce the mini–sett (mean = 3.41), perceived irrelevance of the technology (x = 2.77) and rottening of the sett (mean = 2.57). Important determinants of farmers' use of the technology were age with an odd ratio of 1.28, education (1.55), gender (1.35) and contact with extension workers (1.68). The study recommends farm chemical provision to prevent tuber rottening and training of farmers on the importance of the production technique.
