Typhoid fever in an Ethiopian children's hospital: 1984-1995

Abstract

One hundred and eight cases of typhoid fever were admitted to the Ethio-Swedish Children's Hospital (ESCH) over a period of 12 years (1984 - 1995). The age range was six months to 12 years with the median age of eight years. Intestinal perforation occurred in 27 patients (25%) out of which 10 (37%) died. There were five (4.6%) typhoid cases in the age group of less than two years. The clinical symptoms and signs were comparable with those in the reviewed literatures. The case fatality rate was 15.7%.
