Mental Health Awareness: Reducing stigma and promoting help-seeking
Abstract
Individuals with mental illness continue to face stigmatizing attitudes around the world(1). Despite ongoing efforts to improve knowledge and awareness of mental health conditions, widespread misunderstandings and ignorance continue to contribute to stigma (1). Complex conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders remain particularly poorly understood (1). The lack of understanding about these mental illnesses is partly due to their low prevalence(1). Since most people don’t personally know someone directly affected by these conditions, they often rely on stereotypes(1). Unfortunately, these stereotypes perpetuate harmful beliefs: that individuals with mental illness are dangerous,A unpredictable, lack competence in self-care, and have little chance of recovery(2). Advocates for mental health, must challenge these stereotypes, promote education, and foster empathy. By doing so, they can create a more compassionate and informed society, one that supports and uplifts those facing mental health challenges (1,3). By reviewing existing literature, this study aims to explore stigma and its impact on mental health, as well as analyze initiatives and strategies that have been used to reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behavior.
