Managing social media learning platforms in secondary education for the attainment of sustainable development goals: Issues, challenges and way forward

Gertrude I. Oliobi

Abstract

The focus of this paper is on managing social media learning platforms as innovative education delivery system in Nigerian secondary  schools. In doing this, the paper critically examines the traditional pedagogy which is gradually but surely giving way to more innovative  methods of teaching and learning. Social media, no doubt, has become an indispensable platform for galvanizing innovative education  because of the very large social space it occupies and its ability to arrest the attention of the youths, particularly, the students. Secondary  education is a very important level in Nigerian education because it is at this level that students are prepared for higher educational attainments. Social media learning platforms have become very important avenue for injecting newness into teaching and learning and  have been proved to have numerous benefits in this regard. This novel pedagogical approach however is not without issues and  challenges. The huge benefits of social media learning platforms cannot be fully maximized if the attendant challenges are not managed  properly and the way forward proffered. This paper therefore focuses on managing this ubiquitous learning platform (social media) for  the achievement of sustainable development goals in the Nigerian secondary school system.
