Utilization of school plants and retraining programmes for enhanced teachers’ performance in public Senior Secondary Schools in Rivers State

Abstract

The main thrust of this study is to x-ray how utilization of school plants and retraining programmes enhance the performance of teachers  in public senior secondary schools in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State. Descriptive survey design was adopted  and the sample size was 760 respondents. Two research questions guided the study. Date were collected using researchers-structured  instrument titled “Improving school plant utilization for enhanced teacher performance questionnaire” (ISPUTPQ). The instrument which  was validated by experts had a reliability index of 0.88 established using Cronbach Alpha. The research questions were answered using  mean and standard deviation. The findings include that teachers’ utilization of laboratory facilities can be improved through making the  facilities accessible to the teachers, regular monitoring to ensure the facilities are used in the teaching-learning process and organizing  routine refresher programmes to acquaint teachers of any innovative ways of utilizing provided facilities. The study concluded that when  the provided laboratory facilities are properly utilized in the teaching and learning process, it enhances the teachers’ performance.  Recommendations include that the teachers should be made to have access to provided laboratory facilities and teachers should be  exposed to innovative refresher programmes.
