Attaining sustainable development through university research in Rivers State, Nigeria

Abstract

The paper investigated the contributions of university research to Sustainable Development in Rivers State, Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses were used in the study. The instrument used for data collection was an 11-items questionnaire. The population of the study consisted of the entire academic staffs in the three public universities in Rivers State. The sample size used was 150 university academic staffs selected through a purposive sampling method. The research questions were analyzed using mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested using z-test. The findings revealed that the university research is confronted by series of fundamental challenges hindering its research effort for sustainable development. It was concluded that inadequate research hinders the attainment of sustainable development. It was recommended that these challenges should be addressed to give room for the development of key sectors of the economy.
