Management of classroom and ICT facilities for the achievement of secondary education goals in Rivers State

Abstract

This study investigated Management of Classroom and ICT Facilities for the Achievement of Secondary Education Goals in Rivers State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive research design. the population of this study consisted of 5210 made up of 2560 male and 2650 female teaching staff in secondary school in ten Local Government Areas of Rivers State. The sample consisted of 516 males and 627 females teaching staff in secondary schools in six (6) Local Government Areas of Rivers State. Stratified random sampling techniques was adopted in drawing the sample. Self-designed instrument titled Management of Classroom and ICT Facilities for the Achievement of Secondary Education Goals in Rivers State Questionnaire (MCIFASEGRSQ) was used for data collection. Face and content validities were ensured by experts. The reliability coefficient of 0.835 was compiled for (MCIFASEGRSQ) with the help of Cronbach alpha. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while the hypothesis was tested with independent sample z-test at 0.05 alpha level. The major findings from the study are that new classroom and the ICT facilities should be provided and the existing ones should be regularly maintained and kept in good condition for effective teaching and learning process in the schools to achieve the goals of secondary education in Rivers State. The findings revealed that classroom facilities can be managed by provision, utilization and maintenance of the classrooms by the government, private bodies, students and staff in the schools. ICT facilities can be managed by provision of ICT equipment and utilization of the facilities by the users in schools. In conclusion, the provision, utilization and maintenance of classroom and ICT facilities are very important if the goals of secondary education are to be achieved. Recommendations made are that the Rivers State Government should provide standard classrooms and ICT facilities in all the secondary schools in the State. Other facilities in secondary school like dormitories, assembly halls, staff rooms and staff quarters should be well equipped, properly utilized and maintained.
