Management strategies and challenges of peace and security education for quality service delivery in secondary schools in Rivers State.

Abstract

The study examined the management strategies and challenges of peace and security education for quality service delivery in secondary schools in Rivers state. The study is a descriptive survey design guided by two research question and two null hypotheses. The sample of the study was 485 teaching staff made up of 104 principals and 381 teachers, drawn from a population of 7880 teaching staff in 268 public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. The data was collected using a5-item self-designed instrument titled “Management of Peace and Security for Quality Service Delivery Scale’’ (MPSEQSDS)Mean and standard deviation were used to in answering the research questions while z test was used in testing the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results of the findings revealed that, by making the school environment to be a model of peace, developing a curriculum that promotes peace and security are some of the ways principals manage peace and security education in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. It was concluded that despite the efforts put in the management of peace and security education in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State, the society is still devoid of peace. Recommendations include that the government should ensure that the schools get competent staff to manage peace and security education. Also, parents should be encouraged to partner with the schools in managing peace and security education, as this will help achieve quality service delivery.
