Influence of time and space utilisation rate on students’ academic performance in Public Tertiary Institutions in Lagos State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study has the purpose of finding out the influence of time and space utilisation rate on students’ academic performance in public tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The descriptive research design was adopted, its population was the seven conventional public tertiary institutions and the sample of the study consisted of six institutions. A multistage sampling technique was used to select Departments from each sampled public tertiary institution. Record Observations Formats I, II, III and IV were used to collect data after ensuring their validity without establishing their reliability coefficients since data collected already existed in the tertiary institutions. The two null hypotheses formulated were tested using inferential statistics of Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance. The findings showed there is a negative negligible and insignificant relationship between time utilisation rate and students’ academic performance in public tertiary institutions in Lagos State (r = -0.127, p > 0.05) and there is a positive and insignificant relationship between space utilisation rate and students’ academic performance in public tertiary institutions in Lagos State (r = 0.226 p > 0.05). The study concluded that time utilisation rate and space utilisation rate are not a notable determinant of students’ academic performance in public tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The study, therefore, recommended that the management of institutions should always consider the seating capacity of the existing teaching space/facilities to ensure this matches the number of students eventually admitted; and academic staff should be made to strictly adhere to time and day allocated to them on the timetable.
