Abstract

This study investigated compensation strategy for teachers’ job performance in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Two research questions and one hypotheses were formulated which served as a guide to the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised all the 247 principals of public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. The sample size consisted of 123 principals representing 50% of the population. A validated instrument titled Compensation Strategies for Teachers’ productivity Questionnaire (CSTPQ) was used in data collection. The instrument yielded a reliability index of 0.75, using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient statistics. The statistical tools for data analysis were weighted mean and standard deviation statistics for research questions, z-test for testing of the null hypotheses of the study at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that leave allowances, regular salary payment, incentives, fringe benefits, payment of promotion arrears and welfare packages usually make the teachers happy, punctual to class, ready and disposed to attend to their students. It was inter alia recommended that Rivers State government should ensure that teachers’ welfare packages such as salaries, leave allowance, etc are regularly provided for teachers.
