Abstract

The study focused on teacher factor for the implementation of the Universal Basic Education in Imo State, Nigeria. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population comprised all the 1,064 UBE schools in the three educational zones of Imo State, Nigeria. The sample size of the study was 456 schools which represent 42% of the population selected using the stratified proportionate random sampling technique. The instruments for data collection were Document Analysis and a self- structured questionnaire titled: Teacher Factor for the Implementation of Universal Basic Education Questionnaire (TFIUBEQ) which was validated by Measurement and Evaluation and Educational Management Experts and with 0.87 reliability index determined through the test re-test method. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while z-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed among others that there are quality teachers available for the implementation of the UBE programme but low level of supervision. It was recommended that the Ministry of Education and the relevant agencies should strengthen school supervision to ensure that quality is assured especially in the area of teaching relevance.
