School-administrators’ communication and supervising practices for secondary school environmental safety in Rivers State
Abstract
The study examined school administrators’ communication and supervising practices for secondary school environmental safety in Rivers State. Two (2) research questions and 2 hypotheses were answered and tested in the study, respectively. The design of the study was the analytic descriptive survey, with the population as the 258 public secondary schools in Rivers State. These schools have a corresponding number of 258 principals, from which 181 (70%) were selected as sample using the stratified random sampling technique. The instrument of the study was a validated researchers’ constructed 12-item School Administrators Communication and Supervisory Practices for Secondary for Secondary School Environmental Safety Scale (SACSPSSESS), designed in the modified 4-point Likert scale model, with a reliability co-efficient of 0.82, obtained using Cronbach Alpha model. Mean and standard deviation were used in answering the research questions while z-test was used in testing the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results from data analysis showed that school administrators communication and supervisory practices enhance secondary school environmental safety in Rivers State. Consequently, it was concluded that school administrators’ communication and supervisory practices are strong determinants of secondary school environmental safety. Recommendations are that educational administrators should continuously employ effective communication practices as communication drives the achievement of school environmental safety apart from continuously and regularly supervising their subordinates which help in measuring productivity in school environments.
