Perception of principals and teachers on the strategies for eradicating poverty through quality secondary education in Owerri Education Zone of Imo State.

Abstract

This study adopted a descriptive survey to investigate the perception of principals and teachers on the strategies for eradicating poverty through quality secondary education in Owerri education zone of Imo State. All the 110 Principals and 293 teachers were drawn from a population 2927 teachers through a simple random sampling technique of lO% of the teachers’ population. A 10-item instrument titled “Perception of Principals and Teachers on the Strategies for Eradicating Poverty through Quality Secondary Education Scale” (PPTSEPQSES) was used to collect data for answering the two research questions and testing the null hypothesis. Mean was used to answer the research questions, were means above 2.50 were seen to be agreed while means below 2.50 were seen to be disagreed. z-test was used to test the hypotheses at 5% level of significance. It was found among others that the strategies for eradicating poverty through quality secondary education in Owerri education zone of Imo State include: regular motivation of teachers, through professional development of teachers, regular payment of teachers’ salaries, provision of learning materials, regular inspection and supervision, adequate funding, provision of infrastructural facilities. The study recommended among others that the government should endeavour to provide the needed fund to achieve quality secondary education so as to eradicate poverty in the state. Through provision of learning materials, the government can help to achieve the objectives of quality secondary education for poverty eradication.
