Abstract

HIV infection has reached epidemic proportions in many African countries. Balint reported that as at the end of 1997 over 21 million persons were living with HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. This number represents more than two thirds of the world\'s total. AIDS-related respiratory, gastrointestinal, gynecological and skin, infections and malignancies have been extensively documented by several authors. Urogenital manifestations of AIDS are not as well documented but they appear to be on the increase. Kidney diseases may be caused by HIV infection itself, secondary infections or administered drugs. AIDS-related nephropathy and lymphoma have been documented. There is, however, paucity of cases of AIDS-related renal abscesses. A case of AIDS-related giant renal abscess is presented because of its rarity. It also shows the need to appreciate the pleomorphic spectrum of visceral complications of AIDS.
