Abstract

Omphalocele is a rare congenital amornaly with incidence of about 2.5 in every 4000 to 10,000 live births in the general opulation . The ventral abdominal defect is usually midline and the eviscerated organs through the defect form a sac at the apex of which is inserted the umbilical cord stump.

The omphalocele may occur alone or may be associated with other congenital anomalies. The frequency of these associated anomalies as observed by different authors vary and range from 29- 55%

A two week old male neonate with omphalocele, sepsis and no detectable associated anomaly is reported.

Review of current literature suggests that this anomaly is yet to be documented in Nigeria. The role of radiology in the proper evaluation of patients with omphalocele is discussed.
