Ovarian Leiomyoma: An Uncommonand Possibly Underecognized Entity
Abstract
Leiomyoma of the ovary is a very rare tumour. Most cases are assymptomatic and found incidentally on routine pelvic .examination, at surgery or at autopsy we report a case of ovarian leiomyoma in a 21- year- old Lady, whose pelvic sonographic findings suggested ovarian teratoma or fibroma or pedunculated fibroid. We present the case, as an uncommon and possibly unrecognized entity in our environment, to raise the index of suspicion in a population where the commonest pelvic tumour is a fibroid [uterine leiomyoma]. A discussion of the features that create diagnostic confusions in this entity and in sonographic evaluation of pelvic masses in general is presented.
