Abstract

Swart koring by Joan Hambidge as parody and pastiche on popular culture [Afrikaans]


In this article the functioning of parody and pastiche as postmodern strategies in Swart koring [Black Wheat] by Joan Hambidge is investigated. Firstly, the concepts of parody and pastiche within traditional and postmodern theoretical frameworks are discussed to clarify the distinction between these two closely related concepts. Secondly, the ways in which popular culture is undermined through the functioning of parody and pastiche and how this process operates within two specific postmodern manifestations will be explored. These manifestations include the disappearance of boundaries between high and popular literature and the manifestation of mass culture.

In hierdie artikel word die funksionering van parodie en pastiche as postmoderne strategieë in Joan Hambidge se Swart koring ondersoek. Eerstens word die konsepte parodie en pastiche in tradisionele en postmoderne teoretiese verband bespreek om die onderskeid tussen die twee naasliggende konsepte duidelik te maak. Tweedens, word ondersoek ingestel na die wyse waarop populêre kultuur deur die funksionering van parodie en pastiche ondermyn word en hoe hierdie proses in twee bepaalde postmoderne manifestasies beslag kry. Dit sluit ondermeer die verdwyning van die grense tussen hoë en populêre literatuur en die verskyning van massakultuur in.
