The effect of graded levels of poultry offal in the diet of clarias gariepinus
Abstract
The effect of inclusion of graded levels of poultry offal in the diet of Clarias gariepinus on growth performance and cost effectiveness was determined. Group A (control) was fed with 100% concentrate ration while test group B was fed with concentrate at graded level of inclusion of poultry offal.
There was no significant difference (p<0.05) in the performance of the two groups in terms of growth rate (GR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR), feed efficiency ratio (FER) and cost effectiveness (CE). Group A however had a higher final mean live weight and total length of 720gms and 47 cm relative to Group B with 465gms and 37cm respectively.
Assessment within group B using FCR, FER, GR, SGR and CE as indices shows that the performance varies within the group. Our study shows that poultry offal is a viable alternative to the more expensive conventional animal protein in fish feeds. An investigation into means of presenting it in an aesthetically acceptable way is hereby recommended.
