Outbreak of contagious bovine Pleuropneumonia in Ibarapa, south west Nigeria
Abstract
A suspected outbreak of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) was studied in Ibarapa, south western Nigeria. There was over 60% morbidity and 20% mortality. Lung tissues, pleura fluids, nasal swabs, and serum samples were examined. CBPP was confirmed from the characteristic gross µscopic changes in the lungs of affected animals and by the culture of the agent Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies mycoides SC. The findings were also supported by the demonstration of specific ELISA antibodies. There is need to intensify surveillance and control of CBPP in Nigeria.
