Abstract

The effect of aqueous extract of Enantia chlorantha on some haematological parameters in albino rats during a twenty eight day orally administration of the doses of 50, 100 and 200mg/kg body weight was investigated. The results showed significant increases (p<0.05) in packed cell volume (PCV) and platelet count at 50 and 200 mg/kg body weight of the extract respectively were administered. There was also a significant elevation (p<0.05) in the total white cell count (WBC) at 100mg/kg body weight dose of extract. The lymphocytes were significantly increased (p<0.05), while there was a concomitant significant reduction (p<0.05) in the neutrophils count. There were no significant changes (p>0.05) in the other haematological indices. The results of the present study showed that chronic administration of extract Enantia chlorantha of at the doses considered, would not cause anaemia but high dose may induce thrombocytosis and transient immune modulation.
