Factors Associated with Delay Recovery Rate and Surgical Outcome among Caesarean Section Patients in Selected Hospitals in Ibadan, Nigeria
Abstract
Globally, caesarean section (CS) is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in obstetrics and is certainly one of the oldest surgeries. The study assessed knowledge and factors associated with delay recovery rate and surgical outcome among caesarean sections patients in selected hospitals in Ibadan.
The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional research design. The population comprised of women who delivered via caesarean section in selected hospitals in Ibadan. A sample size of 103 was selected using a multiple sampling technique. Data were collected by using a structured questionnaire and were analysed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 23 and descriptive and inferential statistics were used to present the data.
The result shows that the mean age of the respondents is 34.13±8.01 and less than half (40.8%) of the respondents had good knowledge about caesarean section. The result further indicated that wound infection, febrile morbidity and urinary tract infection are responsible for delay recovery following CS, while the majority (85.4%) of the respondents had positive surgical outcome.
This study concluded that post CS mothers had a good recovery rate after caesarean section and wound infection, febrile morbidity, wound gaping and urinary tract infection are factors responsible for delay recovery following CS. Therefore, there is need for the surgical team and the midwives to intensify efforts on improving their aseptic techniques and give adequate health education to patients to achieve more positive outcome among post CS patients.
