The need-oriented approach to improving Adult Basic Education delivery in Nigeria
Abstract
This paper subscribes to the view that the high drop-out rate vis-a-vis the low enrolment ratio in the current adult basic education efforts in Nigeria is due to the non-tailoring of the programme to the adult learners' needs and interests. It is highly probable that the adult learners do not readily appreciate this programme either because the content of what is being offered is not helping them solve their daily problems or is above their learning capabilities. It is the authors' conviction that if the needs of the potential adult learners are identified and then built into the adult basic education programme; and with their active involvement in the learning process, it will greatly improve the teaching-learning activities. This is one of the major strategies that adult learners can be attracted to participate in the literacy programme.
