Ethics, Moral Values and the Logic of Cultural Relativism.

Abstract

At this scientific age, various societies of the world appear to be experiencing a wholesale bastardization of and the ensuing crisis of morality. Man seems to be induced into new attitudes of mind which finds expression in self – liberation, trivial banalities and the rejection of basic morality. Contemporary ethical theorists have come up with various theories of morality which seek to give explanation to this phenomenon. This paper examines the theory of cultural relativism which holds that all ethical truth is relative to a specified culture or society and argues that the theory suffers from an illogical conclusion. Looking at globalization from the perspective of ethics, this paper makes case for universalizable absolute moral standards, in a regulated sense, as a panacea for the contemporary global moral crisis.
