This study adopted a qualitative case studies method with nine universities selected in Southern Nigeria. Southern Nigeria is made up of South-East, South-South, and South- West geo-political zones. The selection was purposely done in a way that one federal university, one state university, and one private university were selected from a geo-political zone; and efforts were made not to select more than one university from a state. The study used a self-designed and validated checklist and interview guide as instruments for data collection. The checklists and the interview guide were completed by coordinators of IL programs in the universities (that is, the academic librarians in charge of the IL program or the university librarian in some cases). The findings of the study revealed that instructional resources and traditional face-to-face teaching methods still abound in Southern Nigerian universities, especially for IL programs. This delivery method runs contrary to the digital natives’ preference for digital technologies and applications, considering their continuous movement with hand-held devices and active participation in the social media space. It places at its core, an online classroom for delivering instructions through facilitation of access to seasoned tutors and multimedia information resources for engaged learning and academic work by students. This paper explores existing studies on the types and the use of anti-plagiarism software for checking ODeL students’ assignment and project writing through deductive thematic analysis. n=422 scholarly articles were sieved from the Google scholar search engine, manageable and analysed using six basic steps of familiarization with the studies, coding, and themes construction from the studies, reviewing themes, defining the themes and writing thematic analysis to identify themes on anti-plagiarism software used in ODeL and challenges. It was revealed that the types of anti-plagiarism software used for authenticating ODeL students’ assignments and projects are categorized into open source that are freely available and the commercial ones which require subscription and authorization to use. The plagiarism detection software mostly used in ODeL universities around the globe is Turnitin followed by iThenticate. The least used is My Drop Box, other fairly used ones are Plagiarisma, Plag Scan, Copy Leak and WordCHECK. Some of the notable challenges that aid plagiarism are, not understanding when to cite authors in works and wide access to the Internet. The least challenge has to do with inability to format citation and references. Other notable challenges are not having appropriate information literacy skills training, lack of ability to do “information synthesis and lack of motivation. It was concluded and recommended that, ODeL institutions must harness resources to address the growing cases of unethical use of intellectual literary works of authors by the students in their assignments and projects. They should do so approaching the challenge by providing enabling policies, technology and cooperation. The policy must include training and embedded programmes for ODeL students, educators and other relevant stakeholders to ensure uniformity and promotion of coordinated approach to ethical teaching and learning.
Ibrahim Salihu Yusuf Abdullahi Hussaini Copyright (c) 2024 2024-09-13 2024-09-13 24 1 171 180 Academic librarians’ attitude towards research support services in university libraries in Delta State, Nigeria https://www.ajol.info/index.php/sjis/article/view/278544
This study investigated academic librarians' attitudes towards research support services in university libraries in Delta State, Nigeria. Qunatitative research methodology and correlational research design and administering a self-developed questionnaire to 97 librarians across ten university libraries. Using literature and the aforementioned schemes’ latest editions, the work observed that both the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification Schemes have a huge bias towards Christianity, while Judaism, Islam, Bahai faith, Zoroastrianism and other faiths are not given such extensive treatment. The situation, which leads to a lack of uniformity and consistency in the placement of some religious works on the sparsely treated religions, is caused by the societal preferences and demographics of the originators of the two major schemes considered in this work. While the work acknowledges that it is an innocuous yet deliberate situation, the negative effects of such situations affect the organization and retrieval of information on the sparsely treated religions in libraries that have adopted the aforementioned classification schemes. To address this imbalance, the work recommends the intervention of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) in providing standards for subject cataloguing, and creation of an IFLA-owned universal classification scheme that should address the inherent biases of most globally adopted classification schemes like the Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification schemes.
Kingsley N.
