Abstract

The introduction of the oral anti-diabetic drugs has opened a new era in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. While these drugs are seldom effective in the young insulin-deficient diabetic, their usefulness has been proved in the maturity onset or 'middle-old-aged' group. Two main groups of these drugs have come into common usage, viz. the sulphonylureas and the diguanides. In the sulphonylurea group the two drugs most widely used are tolbutamide and chlorpropamide, while phenformin (DBn and dimethyldiguanide ('glucophage') are those particularly used in the diguanide series.
