Abstract

The characteristic defects of the human cyclops can be produced by a direct or indirect lesion of the anterior cranial neural crests. Apart from the reduction of the forebrain (telencephalo~), the development of the nasal placodes (and consequently the nasal capsule and olfactory nerve) will be inhibited, while the destruction of the neural crest cells will result in the absence of the nasal septum and median facial membrane bones. The eye rudiments remain in the embryological position near the midline and fuse.
