Abstract

To investigate the reasons motivating youth to participate in underwater hockey, the Participation Motivation Questionnaire (PMQ) was administered to 174 underwater hockey players. Responses indicated that the most important reasons for participation in underwater hockey were to ";have fun, fitness, excitement, team affiliation and action";. Factor analysis suggested five dimensions of participation motivation. These were labelled ";achievement/status, team affiliation, fun and friends, skill development and energy release";. The study generally supports previous findings. There were no significant differences between the male and female findings. This may suggest that coaches need not be overly concerned about the motive differences between the sexes if they happen to be coaching co-ed underwater hockey teams. Coaches and organizers of youth underwater hockey should place emphasis on the fun and skill development aspects of underwater hockey.
