Die Akkulturasie Van Die Khoikhoi En Die Slawe In Die Kaapkolonie (1652-1910) – 'n Historiografiese Ondersoek
Abstract
The acculturation of the Khoikhoi and the slaves in the Cape Colony (1652-1910) –
a historiographical inquiry:
In 1652, when the Dutch settler colony in South Africa was founded, the western part of the
territory that later became known as the Cape Colony was mainly inhabited by the Khoikhoi.
Until the beginning of the nineteenth century thousands of slaves from other parts of Africa
and from South-east Asia were brought to the Cape Colony. In the period before 1910 the
Khoikhoi as well as the slaves and their descendants lost their original cultures almost completely and acquired a Western culture. The article examines historical writing on this acculturation process. It appears that the westernisation of the Khoikhoi and the slaves has
received insufficient attention in most historical surveys and has not been researched very
intensively.
