Abstract
A comparison or broiler performances on milled and unmilled sorghum-based diets. This study was undertaken to determine whether it is essential to mill sorghum before it is included in broiler diets. Remarkable savings can be achieved if unmilled sorghum could be included in broiler diets without a detrimental effect on live mass-gain or feed efficiency. It was found that unmilled sorghum significantly reduced feed efficiency during the initial growth period of 0-21 days. The broilers, however, compensated fully for this shortfall during the finishing period. When broilers were slaughtered at 42 days of age, unmilled sorghum in the diets had no significant effect on broiler production in terms of live mass-gain or feed efficiency. Although not statistically significant, there was a tendency towards a higher live mass in broilers fed the unmilled sorghum diets.
