A narratological critique of NG Sibiya’s novel, Bengithi Lizokuna

The ways in which an author tells a story to a reader and the strategies employed to create a prose narrative are referred to as narrative  techniques. Narratology has its roots in Aristotle and Hegel, who said that they are ordering of events in discourse. This article analyses  different narratological approaches used by NG Sibiya on his novel, Bengithi Lizokuna, where descriptive and expository techniques,  foreshadowing, dialogue, flashbacks, code-switching, frame story and plot twist techniques are utilised. This study tries to answer  questions about why these techniques are implemented, and how they develop a story. Using a qualitative research method, the causes  are explained using narratology as a theory of analysis. The episodes and excerpts that make up the data were selected from Bengithi  Lizokuna and coded according to the relevant narrative techniques. Data analysis and discussion reveal that the readership, visualising  incidents, entertainment and resonance were among the reasons why Sibiya NG selected these narrative techniques as his story-telling  approach. Additionally, research revealed that the author’s biography and plot had an impact on the narrative technique utilised in this  novel.
