Ukuhlaziywa kolimi lwesiZulu lokwethula isimo emigwaqweni ngephimbo lomethuli u-Ayanda Msweli woKhozi FM olucashunwe kuYouTube

Abstract

Izindlela zokwethula inkulumo noma isibikezelo azifani, kuphinde kuye ngokuthi wethula emsakazweni, kumabonakude noma  esidlangalaleni. Ulimi lwesiZulu olunothile luvame ukusebenzisa izimo zokukhuluma nezinye izinandisi zolimi. Izimo zokukhuluma  zihlukene kathathu, izisho izaga nezifenqo. Isizwe samaZulu singesinye sezizwe ezaziwa ngekhono lokuqamba nokuthuthukisa ulimi  kusetshenziswa izimo zokukhuluma. Lesi siphiwo siyindalo ngoba asifundelwa ndawo. Nasemandulo izisho nezaga zaziqanjwa  ngokubuka isimo esenzekile, maqede kuqanjwe noma iluphi uhlobo lwesimo sokukhuluma ngaleso simo. Lolu cwaningo luhlose ukuveza  amakhono okusebenzisa nokuqamba ulimi uMnu. Msweli awavezayo uma ethula isimo sezimoto emgwaqweni emsakazweni Ukhozi FM.  Lapha kuhloswe ukuveza ubuciko bokuqamba kulolu hlelo oluthatha imizuzwana oKhozini FM nsuku zonke ekuseni nantambama emva  kwezindaba. Nhlobo luni lolimi alusebenzisayo uma ethula uhlelo lwesimo sezimoto emgwaqweni? An exploration of Ukhozi FM traffic anchor Ayanda Msweli’s isiZulu linguistic repertoires extracted from YouTube

Idioms, proverbs and figures of speech are all part of the isiZulu linguistic repertoire. Among South African languages, isiZulu is noted for  its innovation and aptitude in coining new linguistic terms depending on the conditions and experiences. This innate ability has  resulted in numerous idioms, proverbial expressions and figures of speech. This study aims to decipher Ayanda Msweli’s coining ability  as revealed by his daily traffic reports on Ukhozi FM. The objective of this research is to find answers to questions about the talents and  skills displayed in the daily two-minute traffic report updates provided by Msweli. This article answers the questions, ‘What linguistic skills  are presented in Ukhozi FM traffic reports?’; ‘Do these daily traffic statistics reveal any additional newly coined linguistic elements?  And, if so, what are they?’. This study is based on the theoretical framework of the speech accommodation theory. This theoretical  approach is based on the use of language in reports and analyses offered to various audiences for various goals. This study employs a  qualitative research method based on daily traffic report language use. Data is extracted from YouTube videos using purposive sampling.  The findings suggest that these daily traffic reports reflect various newly coined linguistic phrases that represent Msweli’s  idiom- and proverb-coining talent, with code-switching between isiZulu to English. Another discovery is his narratology analysis technique  and reporting ability to inform road users of accidents, traffic flow and other hazards.
