A close reading of Northern Sotho folksongs

Some folklore scholars regard African oral literature merely as a social pastime, a belief which other scholars have proved wrong.  Northern Sotho folksongs, like other folklore genres, are not merely there to pass time, they also give messages to the singers and  listeners. The main aim of this article is to reveal the two selected folksongs’ messages and to demonstrate that there is no folksong that  is without a message. To achieve this, two Northern Sotho folksongs were purposefully selected because of their popularity. The study  followed a qualititative research method, where pensioners, both men and women, were selected. What inspired this selection criterion  was their wisdom and knowledge of folksongs. Though folksongs are meant to entertain, they do give meaning and value to the lives of  the various people concerned. Each and every folksong brings about at least one important fact in life, overtly or covertly.
