Abstract

Lo ngumsebenzi onjongo zawo ikukubonisa ukuba igama eli naliphi na alinayo intsingiselo eyeyalo nezimeleyo, onokuthi eli gama  lithetha ‘ukuthi.’ Lilonke kuphawuleka ukuba igama yileyibheli nje yokubiza loo nto ngelo xesha. Lo mcamango ke ukrobisa kuluvo  lokuba igama lithi ukuze kuthiwe intsingiselo yalo ‘ithi,’ intsingiselo leyo ibe iphuhliswe yimeko elisetyenziswe phantsi kwayo. Oku  kuthetha ukuba ngelinye ixesha igama elinye linganenye intsingiselo xa lisetyenziswe kwenye imeko. Kwakhona olu phando luya kuhluba  ukuba imeko iduliswa yindawo, ixesha nonobangela wokusetyenziswa kwegama elo. Uhlalutyo lwentsingiselo yamagama  esiXhosa luya kwenziwa ngokuthi kuqanyelwe ngeethiyori ezintathu ezizezi, ingcamango yemeko (context theory), umxholo wemeko ekukuyo (context of situation) kunye nengcamango engokubhekiselele kulwalamano phakathi kwegama naloo nto kubhekiswa kuyo  (referential theory of meaning). Ezi thiyori ziya kuphuhlisa intsingiselo efumaneka kwizigaba zentetho ezifana nezithethantonye,  oontsingiselombaxa, izichasi kunye noontsingiseloninzi. Olu hlobo lophando lusingise ekuphandeni nasekugocagoceni intlalo yabantu.  Olu phando luza kusebenzisa intyilazwi yophando yobunjani (qualitative approach). Le ndlela yophando ikhethwe kuba iyindlela  esetyenziswa ukufumana ulwazi ngaphandle kokusebenzisa amanani. Luhlobo lophando olufuna ukuba umntu asebenzise ingqondo  kuba luya kusoloko lusebenzisa imibuzo efuna ukwazi ukuba yintoni, bekutheni, phi, kanjani.

A word and its different types of meanings

This work aims to show that a word has no specific meaning where one can say ‘this word means this’. In other words, a word is just a  label of something at that time and place. This idea shows that a word can only have a meaning when used in a particular context, which  means one word may have different meanings when used in different contexts. Also, this work will show that a word can have different  meanings when used in different contexts of place, time and reason. The analysis of isiXhosa words will be observed using three theories,  context theory, context of situation and the referential theory of meaning. All these theories will give clear meanings of different parts of speech like ambiguity, polysemy, antonymy, synonymy and hyponymy. This work aims to show social life by using a  qualitative approach. This research method was chosen because it is a method used to obtain information without using numbers. It is a  type of research that requires a person to use their mind because it will always use questions that want to know what, why, where, and  how.
