Abstract
Amagama ayinto esemqoka kakhulu. Ayikho into engenalo igama emhlabeni. Amagama aveza okuningi mayelananomqambi kanye nalowo oqanjwayo. Aqukethe izincazelo eziningi, amanye aqukethe umlando wokuzalwa kwalowo oqanjwe igama kanti amanye aqukethe imizwa yabaqambi begama. Leli phepha licwaninga ukuqanjwa kwamagama ezikole zaseMaqadini naseMaphephetheni ngamagama amakhosi akhona ngenhloso yokulondoloza umlando walezi zigodi. Abacwaningi bahlonza ukuthi ukuqanjwa kwezikole kusetshenziswa amagama amakhosi kubamba elikhulu iqhaza ekulondolozeni umlando wesizwe. Names are very important. There is nothing in the universe that does not have a name. Names portray a lot about the name bearer and what is being named. Names have different meanings. This article investigates the naming of schools at Ndwedwe in KwaZulu-Natal province under the Maqadini and Maphephetheni tribal authorities. We found that most of the schools in these places are named after their chiefs and this plays a huge role in safeguarding the history of these places. All schools have different names and meanings. The qualitative method was used as a data collection method in this article. Hermeneutics was used as the theoretical perspective to analyse the data. Hermeneutics is a discipline concerned with the art of understanding texts. One of the primary recommendations of this article is that this study should be continued so that people will know more about the history of their chiefs and schools.
