Gaining Community Access in Cross-Cultural Research: A Case of the Abutia Communities in Ghana

Abstract

This article explores the value of community collaboration in cross-cultural research. Gaining community access and acceptance is one, of the most important components of every research undertaking. However, as a Ghanaian researcher in the Diaspora, there were many issues that I had to contend with, one of them being gaining access to community members; and whether I would be accepted as a Ghanaian (insider) or considered a foreigner (outsider). The success of the research depended on the community‟s participation at many levels, particularly because of the rural and geographically isolated community in which the research was conducted. Gaining entry into these small communities and the involvement of local residents in interviews and focus group discussions was possible with the collaboration of traditional leaders and women leaders, both of whom played primary roles as community gatekeepers in helping the research team access and involve community members.

Cet article explore la valeur de la collaboration communautaire dans une recherche interculturelle. L'accès à une communauté et son assentiment sont parmi les éléments les plus importants de toute enterprise d‟une recherche. Cependant, en tant que femme chercheuse ghanéenne dans la diaspora, il y avait plusieurs sujets à traiter tel que les bases sur lesquelles l'accès aux membres d'une communauté peut être realisé, c.à.d. si l‟acception peut être perçu comme une Ghanéenne (de l‟intérieur) ou comme une étrangère (de l‟extérieur). La réussite de la recherche dépendait de la participation communautaire à plusieurs niveaux, mais particulièrement du point de vue de l'isolement géographique de la communauté de recherche. Toutefois, l‟entrée dans ces petites communautés et la participation active des habitants à travers les entretiens et les discussions en groupe ont été facilités par la collaboration des chefs traditionnels et des femmes dirigeantes qui ont su assumer leur rôle principal d‟assister l‟équipe de recherche et impliquer les membres de la communauté.
