Confronting the History of Slavery and Colonization in the Poetry of M. Al-Fayturi and Langston Hughes

Abstract

In his attempt to challenge colonial hegemony and promote the colonized sense
of identity, the African poet, Mohamed Al-Fayturi is engaged in an intercultural dialogue with his master, the African American poet, Langston Hughes, in order to reconstruct a history devastated by slavery and imperialism. Rooted in a revolutionary basis, the mutual dialogue between the two poets aims to dismantle colonial narratives about Africa and the black people by revising history and rewriting the story of slavery and colonization from the viewpoint of the colonized and the oppressed. Carrying the scars of enslavement and
hegemony, Langston Hughes and Mohamed Al-Fayturi poetically engage the history of racism and colonization linking the African literary tradition with its counterpart in the United States.
Dans sa tentative de défier l'hégémonie coloniale et de promouvoir l'identité au
sens colonial du terme, Mohamed Al-Fayturi, poète africain, s'engage dans un dialogue interculturel avec son maître, Langston Hughes, poète américain ; afin de reconstruire une histoire dévastée par l'esclavage et l'impérialisme. Fondé sur une base de révolution, le dialogue mutuel entre ces deux poètes vise à démanteler les préjugés coloniaux au sujet de l'Afrique et du peuple Noir à travers la révision de l'histoire. Ceci pour réécrire l'histoire de l'esclavage et de la colonisation selon le témoignage des colonisés et des oppressés. En portant les cicatrices de l'esclavage et de l'hégémonie, Langston Hughes et Mohamed Al-
Fayturi abordent poétiquement l'histoire de l'esclavage et de la colonisation. Se faisant, ils concilient la littérature traditionnelle africaine à celle des Etats-Unis.
