Abstract

The aim of study was to analyze the therapeutic management of colorectal cancers in our hospital. It was a descriptive and retrospective study in a 10 years’ period, led in the unit of digestive and general surgery of the Libreville Hospital Center. All the cases of colorectal cancers admitted during the period of the study and histologically confirmed had been selected. We had studied the histopathologic forms, the prognostic classification, the therapeutic management and the evolution after treatment. We had retained 51 files including 29 women (57 %) and 22 men (43 %). The mean age of patients was 48 years. The rectal localization represented 43 % of the group. The loco regional extension according to Dukes’ classification revealed 46 % of tumors at stage C and 12 % at stage D. The surgical treatment concerned 41 patients (80 %). It was curative for 88 % and palliative for 12 %. Ten cases (20 %) of rectal cancers were treated by radiotherapy. The abdominoperineal amputation realized in 31 % of the cases was the dominating gesture. The 5 years’ global survival was 13 %. Colorectal cancers are more and more frequent in Libreville. They often affect the young adult. The rectal localization prevails, and because of the diagnostic delays, prognosis is reserved in most of the cases.
