Trauma of the scrotum operated in emergency: Observation of a series of 28 cases.
Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology, the mechanisms of occurrence, the clinical presentation as well as the therapeutic attitudes in case of scrotal trauma. It was a cross-sectional observational study conducted from January 2020 to June 2021. Twenty-eight records of patients who underwent emergency scrototomy for scrotal trauma were included. Data were collected and analyzed with excel 2010. The mean age in the study was 27 years with extremes ranging of 16 and 74 years. The most affected age group was 21 to 25 years old. Post traumatic acute scrotal swelling was the main presenting complaint (27/28). Road traffic accidents were considered to be the main circumstances of occurrence (60.7%). Scrotal ultrasound was performed in 27 patients. The surgical procedures carried included: suture of the albuginea (39.3%), partial orchiectomy (7.1%), total orchiectomy (28.6%), suture of the wound after exploration (3.6%) and orchidopexy in (21.4%). In case of post traumatic scrotal swelling, an ultrasound is not always helpful. Surgical exploration is essential in front of any suspicious case, so as to not miss a serious scrotal lesion and thus preserve the testicle (if possible) and fertility.
