Serum levels of troponin I in obese adults attending University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital
Abstract
Background: Obesity according to World Health Organization (WHO) is a condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health leading to reduced life expectancy and increased health problem.
Aim: To determine the serum concentrations of troponin I in obese adults attending the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
Methods: A prospective one-year study was carried out involving 185 obese subjects who had their troponin I determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and compared with 160 age and sex matched controls using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 17.0.
Results: There was significant difference in the troponin I concentration of 1.16+0.47 obtained in obese subjects compared with 1.40+0.23 in control (P<0.005).
Conclusion: The result of this study suggests that serum level of troponin I is lower in obese adults.
