Abstract

Emerging variants of concern alter the effective reproduction number, and hence the herd immunity threshold for SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Newer variants may eventually render the currently available vaccines ineffective. Unfortunately, most low-to-middle income countries lack local capacity for genomic sequencing, and hence may fail to detect emerging variants on time. These countries must aim to build local capacity for genomic sequencing and enhanced surveillance for SARS-CoV-2, enabling timely identification of new variants and changing epidemiological trends.
