Distribution et reproduction de l'elanion blanc (Elanus caeruleus) en Tunisie
Abstract
This is a preliminary report on breeding in a recently-established population of the Black-shouldered Kite in the Medjerda valley, Tunisia, where the species had not been reported for more than two decades. During the 1998–1999 seasons, 32 pairs were found over an area of 155km2. We recorded reproductive output, clutch size, hatching success and survival, the formation of winter roosts, and nomadism. Factors limiting reproduction were defined. Apart from this regional study, I have reviewed the status of the species in Tunisia, noting its decline from 1975–1990, its slow recovery, and then a sudden expansion from Cap Bon to the valley of Medjerda at the end of the 1990's and the beginning of the new century.
