Application of Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) on wound healing after Pfannenstiel incision in gynecologic surgeries
Abstract
Introduction: In a large number of medical conditions, autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) Is increasingly used. PRP injection is reported to have been used for more than decades to enhance the angiogenesis and healing of wounds. The wound-healing process could have an essential role in cesarean sections. The current study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of autologous PRP topical application in the treatment of wound healing after Pfannenstiel incision in gynecological surgeries.
Materials and Methods: In this controlled trial, 66 patients were admitted to Shohadaye Tajrish and Taleghani Hospital, Tehran, Iran from March 2018 to May 2019 for elective cesarean surgery. The patients were randomly assigned into two categories. After surgery, the intervention group received PRP, While normal treatment was performed for the control group. The primary endpoint was to employ the REEDA scale to measure the improvements in wound healing. The secondary outcome measures were VSS and VAS. The application of repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate all scale scores.
Results: The result indicated that PEEDA was significantly increased in the RPP group compared with the control group (P < 0.001).
Conclusions: Applying PRP tends to be an efficient therapeutic approach to promote and this enhancement is expected due to wound healing expected due to the high level of growth factors in platelet. It could be concluded that the use of PRP can improve tissue repair after the Pfannenstiel incision.
