School Library Spaces: Usage Practices in Some Secondary Schools of South West, Nigeria.
Abstract
The study investigated the unconventional uses to which school libraries spaces are subjected to in secondary schools. A randomly selected five hundred and two (502) undergraduates of Tai Solarin University of Education were used for the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire at the University library for a period of four (4) weeks. Data were analysed using frequency distributions and percentages. The findings show that the non-conventional uses to which school libraries are Subjected to includes: uses as staff room, for school examinations, as storehouses for school equipment, as classrooms, for meetings, as venue for selling of food items to students. It is recommended that stakeholders should collaborate and decide on the way fonuard for school libraries. The need to improve upon the quality of staff, resource m aterials and the reorganization and overhaul of the school system as a whole was highlighted.
