Momordica Foetida (cucurbitacea) A Potential Laxative Granule /Capsule
Abstract
There has been a folklore belief that the plant Momordica foetida has a laxative effect. This paper attempted to investigate this claim. The dried extract was granulated with cornstarch mucilage to produce free flowing granules. Capsules containing 500mg of the granules were hand filled. The capsules were evaluated in terms of uniformity of weight and disintegration.
Phytochemical analysis of the plant extract showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins and cardenolides. Bioassay of the extract was conducted to verify the laxative effect. Result indicated that the cumulative number of faeces per mouse per hour for different doses increased as the concentration of the medicament increased. This increase was definitely due to the laxative effect of the plant extract.
In conclusion, Momordica foetida leaf extract is a potential laxative and could be formulated into a solid –dosage form like granules/ capsules to enhance patient compliance.
