HIV/AIDS Control Activities in Nigeria: Addressing The Issue of Sexual Orientation
Abstract
HIV/AIDS is a major health and development issue, affecting many developing countries, particularly those in Sub-Saharan Africa. It has received attention from various governments and international donor agencies. In Nigeria, a lot has been done, but many programmes have neglected the issue of sexual orientation, from the planning to the evaluation phases. With the number of new infections that are picked up daily, especially among the young and productive part of the population, it is the time for a review of existing strategies. Sexual Orientation is a reality in today's world. Healthcare providers, educators, counselors, civil society groups, programme managers and all other stakeholders, must put into consideration the subject of sexual orientation, when formulating policies, planning programmes, carrying out intervention and at evaluation. Continuous health education, advocacy and public enlightenment are needed to improve on the present situation.
