Abstract

This study was designed to compare the effects of bicycle ergometry exercise and six-minute walk exercise on the heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure in women with pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH).

Thirty subjects (15 primigravidae + 15 mulitigravidae) in their third trimester participated in this study. Their age ranged from 32 +1.42 years to 33.4+ 4.48 years

They were assigned into three groups: Group I (Bicycle ergometry exercise group), Group II (Six minute walk exercise group) and Group III (No exercise group or the control group). Subjects heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were measured with Health line mercury Sphygmomanometer and a double tube rapparport stethoscope before and after six weeks of exercise. Analysis of data was done with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent t test. The level of significance was set at 0.05.

The result showed reduction in the heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure after six weeks of exercise in all the groups. Significant difference in the post exercise diastolic blood pressure (F= 6.15, P=0.00) and heart rate (F=5.59, P=0.00) were recorded among the three groups. Further analysis with independent t test showed that subjects in Group I (Bicycle ergometry exercise group) had significantly lower diastolic blood pressure (t =4.03, P= 0.00) and heart rate (t =2.99, P=0.00) than the subjects in Group III (control group). Similarly, subjects in Group II (Six minute walk exercise group) had significantly lower diastolic blood pressure (t =3.43, P= 0.00) and hearts rate (t =4.00, P=0.00) than the subjects in the control group. There was no significant difference in the heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the subjects in Group I and II before and after the exercise (P> 0.05).

The outcome of this study showed that both bicycle ergometry exercise and six minute walk exercise are capable of reducing heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure in women with (PIH).
