About the Journal
The Nigerian Medical Journal (NMJ), which was first published in 1964, is a bimonthly multidisciplinary medical journal published by the Nigerian Medical Association.
Publication scope:
The Nigerian Medical journal publishes scientific reports that seek to advance medical and health science in all areas. The manuscripts submitted to the Nigerian Medical Journal may be in the form of Systematic or Narrative Review articles, Original research articles, case series and reports, Letters to the Editor, Short commentaries, Continuing Medical Education articles and practice materials and Book reviews.
Abstracting and Indexing Information:
The Nigerian Medical journal is registered with the following abstracting partners: African Journals Online (AJOL), Baidu Scholar, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure), EBSCO Publishing's Electronic Databases, Ex Libris – Primo Central, Google Scholar, HINARI, Infotrieve, National Science Library, ProQuest, TDNet, Wanfang Data. The journal is indexed with or included in African Index Medicus, PubMed Central and Medline.
Journal Ethics:
The Nigerian Medical Association and the Nigerian Medical Journal are committed to meeting and upholding the highest standards of ethical behaviour at all stages of the publication process. The Nigerian Medical Journal follows the guides and norms of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME).
Editorial Autonomy:
The Editor and the Editorial board function with autonomy and independence in the editorial and financial decision-making processes of the journal in accordance with the WAME and ICMJE recommendations.
Conflict of Interest Policy:
The NMJ requires authors and reviewers to declare and complete the declaration of interest section in the author submission and peer review process. All submitted manuscripts must include a ‘competing interest’s declaration’ as outlined in the author guidelines section https://nigerianmedjournal.org/index.php/nmj/about/submissions. Authors are expected to list all competing interests (financial and non-financial). Where authors have no competing interests, the statement should read, “The authors have declared no competing interests.” Editors and reviewers are also required to declare any competing interests and will be excluded from the peer review process if a competing interest exists.
Open Access Publication and Creative Commons Licensing:
The Nigerian Medical Journal is committed to promoting open access to scholarly publications. The journal allows free access (Open Access) to its contents and permits authors to self-archive final accepted versions of the articles on any OAI-compliant institutional / subject-based repository after three months of publication. The articles published by the journal are distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 License, which allows others to remix, tweak, and build upon the work non-commercially, as long as appropriate credit is given, and the new creations are licensed under the identical terms- https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/.
Digital Archiving:
This journal utilizes the LOCKSS system to create a distributed archiving system among participating libraries and permits those libraries to create permanent archives of the journal for purposes of preservation and restoration.
Ahead of Print policy:
Articles published online under the Ahead of Print model are considered published and can be cited and quoted using the DOI as the reference source. The Nigerian Medical journal has a policy that changes will not be made after the publication of an article without following accepted procedures for making corrections to the scientific record.
Plagiarism Policy:
The Nigerian Medical Journal will subject all manuscripts to a plagiarism check after submission and through the course and process of the manuscript review and acceptance for publication. Authors are advised to utilize plagiarism check tools to ensure their manuscripts comply with plagiarism standards to avoid extensive plagiarism. Manuscripts with significant and extensive plagiarism will be rejected, and the author(s) institution may be notified.
